The new Munich Airport commenced operation on 17 May 1992, after moving operations from the former site at Munich-Riem Airport. Lufthansa established a second hub offering several short- and long-haul connections through Munich in addition to Frankfurt. It was necessary to build up the necessary infrastructure and buildings for operation; such as Flight Operation Center, LH Technique Hangar, Passenger Terminal, LH catering and facilities.
